The Leprosy Mission

31/1/2013

Picture
Next Sunday (10th February) we will be holding a collection for the Leprosy Mission

What is The Leprosy Mission?

We are an international Christian development organisation
We focus specifically on leprosy and offer specialist expertise on reconstructive surgery
We treat leprosy complications
We address the fear and stigma associated with having leprosy. Many people suffer in silence because they are too ashamed to find help or do not know where to get help
Our aim is to transform and empower the lives of people affected by leprosy
We work in around 30 countries across Africa, South Asia and East Asia
Our services are provided regardless of religion or ethnicity, promoting equality and social justice.

What does The Leprosy Mission do?

Our work includes:

treating leprosy and providing general health care and health awareness training
training national health staff to diagnose and treat leprosy and prevent disability
providing surgery and physiotherapy
training people affected by leprosy in self-care (caring for areas of the body desensitised by leprosy to prevent injury and disability)
providing education and vocational training
providing housing support, water and sanitation
providing small business loans and training to enable people affected by leprosy to escape poverty and become independent
empowering people affected by leprosy and disabilities to lobby governments and employers for equal rights
medical and social research.

More information can be found on their website.
